The Barnsley Main Heritage Group

The Barnsley Interactive Team were so incredibly impressed by the excellent work and the positive impacts produced by the Barnsley Main Heritage Group (BMHG), we simply had to shout about their work.

What is the Barnsley Main Colliery?

Barnsley Main (Colliery) is a rare survivor of South Yorkshire’s rich mining heritage. The buildings stand as a reminder of an industry that powered the Industrial Revolution and shaped the lives of communities.

The site of Barnsley Main was mined for over 170 years under different names until its final closure in 1991. Today the winding and engine house appear isolated but they were once part of a bustling complex of buildings.

A small pop-up museum has been created which is open between Easter and October half term. Activity packs are available for children. Schools and groups are welcome to visit the site.

Significant Events - The Disaster of 1866

The Oaks Colliery explosion was a British mining disaster which occurred on 12 December 1866, killing 361 miners and rescuers at the Oaks Colliery at Hoyle Mill near Stairfoot in Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire. The disaster centred upon a series of explosions caused by firedamp, which ripped through the underground workings. It is the worst mining accident in England and the second-worst mining disaster in the United Kingdom, after the Senghenydd colliery disaster in Wales.
