Saved from the Skip - Completed

Updated: Jun 20, 2022

We've rescued a garden table and chairs which were destined for a skip, and wanted to share our restoration journey. Hopefully this will inspire others to think twice before throwing restorable items away. Even if you don't fancy doing the work yourselves, you'd be surprised how many people like us enjoy this kind of thing, so it might be worth giving Gumtree or similar a try before resorting to skipping or tipping.

Anyway, here's a few pictures from Stage 1 (arrival)

Stage 2 (quick clean-up)

We cleaned it all up a bit with the hose pipe to get rid of the cobwebs and most noticeable grime. We left it to dry overnight and we're about to cover it in wood preserver.

Stage 3 (apply wood preserver - I think - more Googling required)

MMMMM Less than 24 hours in and it's looking good. I must have cut corners somewhere, it can't be this easy. Getting the oily stuff into all those nooks and crannies took it out of me a bit though I must admit. Let's see if this stuff soaks in overnight.

Stage 4 (Paint it)

All done. Took about four coats of paint to cover the wood. In hindsight I might have prefered the natural wood look, but there's so much wood in the garden as it is. The paint helps to protect the wood so that's an added benefit (see how I'm trying to convince myself that I haven't made a mistake). :-) Spent about £30 in total on wood preserver, paint, and 4 new cushions.

In my opinion you get so much more pleasure out of items you've rescued, as opposed to just going out and buying new each time. I'm happy with the result. Looking forward to some alfresco dining now, just need the sun to come out.

G&G from Shafton.
