Shafton Roundabout

This is hardly the greatest story ever told. In fact, it could even be the most boring article ever published in virtual print, but it's just something I had to share.

We often complain about roadworks, especially at THAT time of year when we're convinced the only reason for doing them is to squander the last of the budget before the end of the financial year. For me, this time was different.

The road surface leading up to the Shafton Roundabout on all sides has been shocking for months if not years. So many potholes you couldn't avoid dinking your alloys on a regular basis. Then out of the blue came these much needed roadworks. All roadworks are annoying, the delays, the diversions, and those little chips in your paintwork caused by the grit which jumps up off the road at all but the lowest speeds. Bibbing your horn angrily at the road workers once you're far enough away to not get caught feels like the only respite (I've been told some motorists do that).

Anyway, the Shafton Roundabout revamp took a couple of weeks to complete, and what a great job they did. Credit where credit is due. The team who managed this work got it spot on. They concentrated the road closures into the evenings to avoid unnecessary chaos, and they configured the temporary lights to keep the queues of traffic at tolerable levels on all sides during busier times (not having three cars in the Pontefract Road queue on one side, and a tailback to Doncaster on the other).

Great job to all involved. We're loving the new surface.

Note: I'm not sure the roundabout gods have completely made up for the Stairfoot Roundabout debacle, but they have restored some faith that is for sure:
