Answer: "Barnsley is ranked 20th out of 326. 31.3% of areas in Barnsley are amongst the 10% most deprived in England for health. 31.4% of the areas within Central Area Council are amongst the 10% most deprived in England for health, whereas in 2010 there were 17.1% of areas."


Question: Is Barnsley famous for anything?

Answer: "Barnsley has a long tradition of glass-making, however Barnsley is most famous for its coal mines. In 1960, there were 70 collieries within a 15-mile radius of Barnsley town centre, but the last of these closed in 1994. The National Union of Mineworkers still has its HQ in Barnsley."

Answer: "Barnsley does offer a lower quality of life than the neighbouring cities of Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield but more than makes up for it with the number of good neighbourhoods and the standard of education that it offers through the various schools."



Question: What did Barnsley invent? Answer: "The prolific Barnsley inventor (Joseph Bramah) is, however, much better known for his flushing water closet, unpickable lock and hydraulic press. The press was a major breakthrough, enabling builders to lift heavy girders. His unpickable lock was exhibited in the window of his fashionable London shop, in 1790."


Question: Why are Barnsley called the tykes?

Answer: "Their nickname, The Tykes, comes from a Yorkshire character, hard working and traditional."


Question: Is Barnsley in Leeds city region? Answer: "The city region encompasses numerous cities and towns throughout Yorkshire. It includes Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Harrogate, York, Selby and Barnsley."

Question: What was Barnsley formerly known as? Answer: "In the Domesday book, Barnsley was originally known as “Berneslai.”
