What is this Jubilee all abart?

This weekend there will be lots of jubilee parties going off across Barnsley. We're unlikely to see celebrations like those in the 60s and 70s again as times have changed, but it should still be a good old knees-up all the same. I wonder what percentage of partygoers will actually know what they're celebrating though? If you want to impress your friends, read on!

What is a jubilee? and why is this one so special?

A monarch, like most of us, celebrate a number of occasions like wedding anniversaries and birthdays annually. In addition to these annual events a monarch celebrates milestones in their reign, and here they are:

  • Silver Jubilee: 25 years

  • Ruby Jubilee: 40 years

  • Golden Jubilee: 50 years

  • Diamond Jubilee: 60 years

  • Sapphire Jubilee: 65 years

  • Platinum Jubilee: 70 years

George III made it to his 50 year anniversary in 1809. Queen Victoria went one better in 1897 when she crossed the 60 year Diamond Jubilee milestone. Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to celebrate her 70 year Platinum Jubilee in 2022, beating Queen Victoria and George III into second and third place respectively.

So now you know. Your friends will think you're a genius (maybe).

God Save the Queen
